NEW JERSEY STUDENT LEARNING ASSESSMENT–SCIENCE (NJSLA-S)The New Jersey Student Learning Assessment–Science (NJSLA–Science) measures student proficiency with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards–Science. These science standards require assessment tasks that examine students’ performance of scientific and engineering practices in the context of crosscutting concepts and disciplinary core ideas. The three-dimensional nature of the standards requires complex test questions and tasks. The NJSLA–Science is only one component of a system of assessments that provide evidence about student learning. The data collected from the NJSLA–Science, students’ interactions with teachers on a daily basis, and their subsequent performance on teacher and district-developed assessments combine to provide a clear and well-rounded picture of students’ achievement. The New Jersey Department of Education has prepared a high-level overview of the background, design, and development of the NJSLA–Science.
This information guide is something that teachers and parents can use to prepare their students. Take a look at the guides... Parent, Student, and Teacher Information Guide NEW JERSEY STUDENT LEARNING ASSESSMENT–SCIENCE (NJSLA-S)

across all areas of science. Technology, for example, shows us the ways technology has changed the world by connecting people internationally at the click at a button. How about the connection between human actions and climate change or how about how atoms connect to form chemical bonds which make up everything around us? There are a plethora of connections within all subjects and all around us, making it an excellent starting point for a celebration of Science! Details will be sent home with students shortly. The STEM Conference project will count as MP 4's Competency 1 assessment for students in grades 2-12. I have set up 2 Educator informational sessions (details below) should you like to discuss the information. Since the 1950’s, State Science Day has inspired students in New Jersey to pursue careers in STEM. The competition was re-envisioned in 2021 to foster growth in science and engineering practices through authentic, community-based problem solving.
NJ State Science Day is a competition to encourage and acknowledge high school students’ use of science and engineering practices to design a solution to a current and challenging problem in their community. The New Jersey State Science Day is open to all New Jersey students in grades 9 through 12. Students compete as individuals. New this year... TEAMS! You may submit as a team of up to 3 people or submit individually. There will be winners in both categories! The 2023 Challenge is... Investigate a problem related to human impacts on New Jersey's water systems and develop a solution based on scientific evidence. Please encourage you students to join this awesome competition. The project that they create can be used as their Science Conference project which is MP4 Summative assessment. There is a link below to the competition website-NJSSD and also a link for especially for student information. Please make sure to get this information out to students by Tuesday, November 22, 2022. Please let me know how I can support these efforts. Dear Parents/Guardians:
New Jersey public schools have had statewide tests for decades, and they have served as an important part of assessing our students’ annual progress. The Start Strong Assessment for English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science, as well as the Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) assessment will be administered in September 2022. In the spring, your child will participate in the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA), New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA), Access for ELLs and/or the Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) to measure your child’s overall academic progress. Willingboro Public Schools will administer the New Jersey Standardized Assessments to students in Grades 3 through 12 in the subject areas of Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Science. English Language Learners as well as students with Individual Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 plans can receive certain assessment accommodations on a case by case basis. The NJ Department of Education has provided a comprehensive parent portal for the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments. There, parents may look up student-specific reports, along with report guides, test information, and a library of digital test items. Please click here to access this portal. Students with the most significant intellectual disabilities take an alternate assessment in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science called the Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM). If your child has special needs and you have questions regarding testing accommodations, please contact your child’s Case Manager. For more information on the Dynamic Learning Maps, please click here. All statewide assessments are administered at different points in time depending upon the assessment, the school, and grade level. Please refer to the calendar below which outlines our district testing schedule in grades K-12. Please refer to the NJSLA F.A.Q (Frequently Asked Questions) List on the accompanying page for more information regarding these assessments. For more information please visit the Office of Curriculum and Instruction webpage. Please contact Jennifer Brandon, Supervisor of Instruction at 609-835-8600 x 1035 if you need additional information about our district’s participation in the state testing program.
